I have a question, why don't more authors write about vampires?

It seems to me that authors are afraid to write about vampires because of The Twilight Saga. (Unless it is a sequel to a series. There might also be a rare exception, but I can't think of one.) No one seems to want to go up against it. There are many new books being release that are similar but are not about vampires. People say things like, "I think the vampire genre is to used up and there are too many books are written about them. Who wants to read another one?" So, they end up writing something else that might do well.

I have a news flash for you, I want to read a vampire novel! Don't give me this other crap. I might enjoy it, but what I really want is  a vampire novel. I also know many people who agree with me. Don't get me wrong, I do love other novels besides vampires. I just think there should be more novels about vampires because I don't think there will ever be enough. The beautiful thing about the vampire genre is you pretty much have a built in fan base. There are so many vampire fans, hence why Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, Vampire Academy, ect, are best selling books.

I was at a writer's conference recently, and I heard two people talking about vampire novels. The one person was saying that she started to write a vampire love story but decided that it wouldn't sell and do well because of Twilight. So, she created these new creatures. I say forget that! It isn't about the money or how well the book will sell. You write because it is something that you love and it takes you to new worlds. You write a story for people to hopefully love. If you want to write about vampires, write about them. Don't be afraid to write about what you love.

I'm not afraid of The Twilight Saga or other vampire novels. I can't wait for my novel to join them on the shelves. I don't care about the money. Yuck! Would it be nice to make thousands of dollars of your novels? You bet! But that is not why I write. I write because it is my passion and because I want to share my stories with you. I wrote DARK GUARDIAN because I want fans to enjoy a good story.

In some ways I am glad more vampires novels aren't being written, at least right now, because when my novel is published people will see it and say, "Yes, finally a vampire novel!"

BTW: I applaud authors of vampire novels. You guys rock!

"All my agony fades away when you hold me in your embrace..."

This weeks song is All I Need by Within Temptation. Within Temptation has probably been my biggest inspiration for DARK GUARDIAN. They have amazing songs! I could probably spend a couple months sharing with you all of their songs that have been my inspiration.

This is another song that belongs on Kara's playlist. It is about her feelings in about the middle of the novel.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone!! I hope you all have a wonderful day. I have a few things coming up this new year that I am looking forward to.

First is the Write Stuff Conference at the end of March. I get to go and learn more about writing while meeting more agents. I hope to find an agent for my novel there, but I will have to wait and see. This is my second year attending, and last year I had four agents interested in my work. Sadly, three of them passed on it but I am hopeful to find an agent this year.

The second thing I am going to start in the new year is blind querying again. I had stopped blind querying because I had four agents interested, and I was working hard to get my novel into shape but now it is almost ready. I hope to have it ready in February or March. (Definitely in time for the conference)

Song of the Week

I have decided that ever week I am going to post a song. These songs might have inspired a character or a scene. Some of them just make me think of either a scene or my characters from my novel. For the character songs, not all of the lyrics will match perfectly with the character, but it is most of them.

This weeks song is Enchanted by Taylor Swift. This is a song that belongs on Kara's playlist.

Side Note: Hopefully this video won't be deleted. If it is just please search the song. It is a great one!

The Publishing Process

The publishing process is long and hard, but I'm hanging in there. I'm not going to give up until I see this novel in bookstores.

It took me a total of three months to write DARK GUARDIAN. The rest of the time has been spent doing rewrites and trying to get it published. I have been working on this novel for two years in December. It maybe a long and hard process, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. The story has grown so much from when I first started writing it. My plot has become more complicated, my characters have grown, and I have learned and grown myself.

In case you aren't familiar with the publishing process, there are two routes an author can take. There is self-publishing and going through a publisher. Self-publishing is the quickest way, but it is a lot of work just to promote your novel. It takes a lot of time and not to mention a lot of money. Printing books isn't cheep.

You might say, well why don't you just get a publisher. That is not as easy as it sounds. An author has two ways to go about this. Some publishers allow authors to sent in their manuscripts, but sometime the manuscript can sit on a shelf for years without being read.

The second way is to go through an agent. That might sound easy as well but trust me, it isn't. In order to find an agent, you have to first query them but they get thousands of those a day. If the agent is interested in your work they may ask for the first fifty pages or the whole manuscript. It is hard to get passed the query letter but once you have it isn't a walk in the park from there. When an agent receives the manuscript they have to read it and decide if this is something they are interested in supporting. If they agreed to support your work, it is now up to them to find a publisher. They have to search for a publisher who is interest in the kind of novel you have and then they have to present it to them.

Don't ask what happens after the publisher accepts a novel because I am not so sure how everything works after that. Obviously they publish it, but I'm not sure the details.

Bottom line: nothing about the publishing process is easy but it is definitely worth it.

Where am I in this long process? I'm still trying to find an agent. I have gotten past the query letter once. The agent read my manuscript and gave me good feedback. Unfortunately, she passed on it. She said I have a great story, but that she felt like she wasn't the right agent for my novel. Oh well, I hope to find an agent soon. Right now, I have three different agents that I met at a conference that are interested in my work. I hope to hear back from them soon.

Spread The Word

Here is a quick update:

I am trying really hard to promote my novel, DARK GUARDIAN. This blog is one of the many ways, and another is my trailer on youtube. If you know anyone who would be interest in a new vampire novel point them in this direction. I would like to build up some hype before the novel is published.

Vampires are probably one of the most fascinating mythical creatures in the world. Why are they so fascinating? That question has been asked many times by many people. Being a vampire lover, I have asked this same question to myself. Many people answer that it is because they are mysterious, dangerous, and sexy. That maybe be true, but I say who cares. All I know is that I love them. Isn't that enough?

Have you ever done a google search on vampire legends? The information that comes up is very interesting. Most of the legends cultures believe similar stories, and some of them seem really dumb. It seems that the creatures we think of as vampires came from the image Bram Stoker created with Dracula. In resent years that myth has been changed and morphed anywhere from L.J. Smith's Stefan Salvatore to Stephenie Meyer's Edward Cullen.

(Before I continue, I want to say that I mean no offense to authors of vampire novels. I love you guys! You are awesome for writing about such fascinating creatures. I love all of your books. You are the one who inspired me to start writing.)

The vampire myth is powerful and fun to play with, but there are two things that you cannot change. You cannot change the fact that they live forever and that they need blood to survive. If you change those things, you cannot call your creature a vampire. Personally, I believe vampires need to have fangs. To me that is apart of their appeal. Also I love their inner struggle. That was fun and interesting to write, which leads me to my vampires.

I won't take to much time talking about my vampires because I want you to read about them. I have created breeds of vampire in my novel. The two main ones are Viridis vampires and Malus vampires.  The Viridis are mostly painted as the good vampires and the Malus as the bad vampires, but that is not really true. It all depends on the vampire's goals and beliefs. Most of my vampires feed off humans, but does that make them bad? I don't think so. The ones who drink from humans are following their instincts and it is natural to them. The two breeds of vampire used to live in harmony but were always uneasy with each other. Ever since the Verus Lamia Clan (a powerful group of Malus vampires) was created, the vampires have not been at peace.

(Btw: I chose Edward and Stefan because they are very well know vampires, especially to people who haven't read that many vampire novels.)

Hello everyone, I know it has been a while since I last updated and I apologize.

My rewrites are moving along slowly, but they are getting done. I hope to pick up the pace a little, but it is hard to juggle everything with school back in now. Trying to balance pleasure reading, working on my novel, school, and extra activities is easier said then done.

Anyway, this time I would like to talk about music. Music is one of the biggest inspirations for my writing. I will hear a song and it will inspire a character or a scene in my head. One of the bands that is my biggest inspiration would be Within Temptation. They are my favorite band, and I listen to them the most when writing. Other artists who helped spark my imagination would be Three Days Grace, The Fray, Kerli, Kelly Clarkson, Evanescence, and Nightwish.

I have a playlist for both my main characters, Richard and Kara. They also have a playlist together. These songs either inspired their character and relationship, the song fits them, or it is a song they would listen to. The songs that I am going to list belong will give you a little bit of insight of what their personality is like. The lists are small and not all of the songs.

(a * means the song fit them before the book began.)

Richard's Playlist:
Ring of Fire - Jonny Cash
I Will Not Bow - Breaking Benjamin (One of my favorite songs for Richard)
*World So Cold - Three Days Grace
Whatya Want From Me - Adam Lambert
She is - The Fray
If You're Not The One - Daniel Bedingfield

Kara's Playlist:
One in a Million - Sandy
The Escapist - Nightwish
Stand in the Rain - Superchik
Cut - Plumb (One of my favorite songs for Kara)
*It's all your fault - Pink
*Cry - Kelly Clarkson
*Going Under - Evanescence
Lonely Life - Stanfour
Walking on Air - Kerli
Uninvited - Alanis Morissette (Just in the beginning of the book)
All I Need - Within Temptation
{Side Note: Avril Lavinge & Pink were big inspirations for Kara's character}

Richard & Kara's Playlist:
Undisclosed Desires - Muse
Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls
Falling Slowly - Glen Hansard (Kris Allen version)
Ache - James Carrington
Resistance - Muse
Bring Me To Life - Evanescence
Mine - Taylor Swift
Whispers in the Dark - Skillet
Comatose - Skillet

That's all I have to say for now. I hope you enjoy the music! :)

First Post

Hello everyone,

The whole reason for this blog is to talk about my novel, DARK GUARDIAN, I am trying to publish. This will keep all of you who are interested in it updated, and I hope it will gather new people who want to read it.

Richard Knight believes there is no reason for him to live. When he is sixteen, his parents are murdered, and since then he wants nothing more than to avenge their deaths. All that changes when Kara Dales walked into his life. Kara expects her life to get worse when she moves to the rainy small town of Oceanrock, England. She retreats into herself because of her painful past, but they have an unexplained connection to each other. Over the next couple of weeks a very special bond is formed between the two of them. However, they both have their own secrets. Kara discovers he is a Viridis vampire while Richard uncovers Kara's dark, painful past of betrayal. When her eighteenth birthday comes, Kara becomes deathly ill. From that illness they discover she is more than just a human, and Richard is destined to be her guardian. Now a powerful group of Malus vampires are after her, and the race begins to save her life, when they capture her. Can Richard get there in time to save her, or will he lose her along with his own life?

I know it doesn't say anything in the synopsis about love, but there is a romance between the two main character Richard and Kara. DARK GUARDIAN is not just about vampires and love, but a whole new mythical world right in the middle of modern day England. Elves, dragons, phoenixes, centaurs, banshees, goblins, and any other mythical creature is included in this new world. Also some new creatures that I have created will be introduced to you. Like I said before, it is not a simple vampire love story. It is a story filled with lots of twists and turns that will hopefully keep the you reading.

I hope to turn this into an eight book series. I have the next seven books outlined, and I have started writing the sequel, which has yet to be named. I have been working on a lot of rewrites at the moment, and I hope to finish them soon. I want to make this the best story it can be, and I hope people fall in love with the characters and the story.

Comment and let me know if anyone is interested in reading it. I also want to know if you guys would like to hear more about how I started writing it, the process, the rewrite process (which I'm in now), and if you want to be update with where I am in the whole process of trying to publish the novel.
